Registration opens at 12:00 p.m. ET. Register Description You won’t find Mercedes de Acosta on anyone’s short list of great early-20th-century writers. Her outspoken personality, dramatic relationships, and touching memoir all outshine her early poems and plays. Yet her first collection of poetry, Moods (1919), offers insight into the mind of a young, ambitious artist in the midst of the modernist movement. In keeping with modernism’s emphasis on experimentation and subjective experience, de Acosta’s prose poems offer intimate and sometimes deep insights into the nature of desire, expectation, intuition, and revelation. Join yogi Liza Seltzer and Rosenbach John C. Haas Director Kelsey Scouten Bates for this poetry-inspired yin yoga practice. You’ll be guided into passive, longer-held poses that invoke both stillness and openness in body and mind; you’ll listen from this place of openness to the writing poet Charles Hanson Towne describes in his introduction to Moods as having “a haunting quality, a breath of mystery, as though a ghost walked into a garden.” The practice will be accessible for all bodies and experience levels; the only prerequisites are curiosity and an open heart. Please bring your own yoga mat and be prepared to fill out an activity waiver. Note: for more de Acosta-inspired yoga, please see the sister workshop scheduled for March 1, 2025: Authentic Heart: Yin Yoga Illuminated by the Works and Life of Mercedes de Acosta .
