Open Space Sandbox’s collaboration with LEAP aims to foster conversations between elementary schoolers about what they would like to see in the vacant lots of their neighborhoods. The children attending the programs will be able to use the online tool to dream of their own designs for nearby public spaces. This program is recommended for grades 3-8.
Open Space Sandbox is a gamified online tool accessible via computer browser that allows members of the public to create designs for public spaces like parks and vacant lots. Users begin by describing what they would like to feel when visiting the public space: calm, energetic, social, etc. Then, they place small icons representing features like sculptures, libraries, benches, public pools, and more onto a real-life online map of their neighborhood. Users are given a certain amount of coins to “spend” on these features, requiring them to remember the goals of the space and think about what should be prioritized.
