This is not your traditional tea party. It is a day of activism and crumpets, centered on dialogue, inspiration, and civic empowerm ent.
Through a moderated discussion with former Philadelphia City Council Member Blondell Reynolds Brown, participants will engage in meaningful conversation about how to inspire the next generation to champion their own voices for freedom. Audience members will be invited to ask questions and take part in a dynamic exchange focused on leadership, courage, and community impact.
Guests will also enjoy a Sunday brunch with tea service, along with a special author meet-and-greet opportunity following the program. Admission includes a copy of the featured book and an individual AAMP membership, encouraging continued connection with the Museum and the ideas sparked throughout the afternoon.
We invite everyone to embody the theme through attire by blending classic tea party elegance with the spirit of resistance and empowerment. Think florals, pastels, and delicate fabrics paired with elements inspired by the Black Panther era – a look that honors both grace and strength.
As echoed in the lyrics of James Brown, “This is a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a girl,” this gathering affirms the power, influence, and necessity of women and girls in shaping a more just and equitable future.
Book Overview:
From the halls of the Philadelphia City Council to the challenges of motherhood, Blondell Reynolds-Brown’s memoir Walking a Tightrope Backward in High Heels offers an unflinching look at what it takes to succeed in the bruising arena of big-city politics. As one of Philadelphia’s most influential councilwomen, Reynolds-Brown shattered glass ceilings and championed transformative legislation for women, children, and families during her remarkable twenty-year tenure.
But behind the headlines and policy victories lay a more intimate story: that of a recently divorced mom, navigating the delicate balance between personal ambition and family obligations. With remarkable candor, Reynolds-Brown reveals the storms she weathered, including a public campaign controversy that threatened to derail everything she’d built. Yet through it all, she demonstrates how to “adjust the sail” when the winds of change blow fiercely.
Part political memoir, part leadership manifesto, this powerful account from a pioneering public servant shows what’s possible with equal measures of moxie and grace. Reynolds-Brown’s journey from educator to accomplished legislator offers an inspiring blueprint for anyone who’s ever had to fight twice as hard to get half as far-and emerged stronger for it.
